Best known for: It’s breathtaking views of the Caldera –the volcanic crater of which this city is the center. Its unparalleled sunsets and its beaches with pink or black sand, depending on which side of the island you’re on. Rent a car (or a scooter for the more adventurous) and explore the island, going up and down the cliffs, enjoying the perfect beauty of the white Greek towns.
When to go:
From the end of May all the way up to mid-September. But beware that the winds are very strong, and after sunsets you will need a shawl or a light jacket to cover up.
Where to stay:
The Grace Hotel Santorini: Luxurious with stunning views of the Agean. Spacious rooms with private pools and great food; warm and friendly staff.
The Mystique: A contender for the best hotel on the Island, located in Oia, in one of the most beautiful towns in Santorini. An infinity pool, wine tastings and luxury, Greek style.
Combine it with:
Other Greek islands, like Mykonos. A (long) boat ride away, or in some cases a short plane ride, definitely worth the detour.
